Counselor’s Corner

From Mrs. Barnes…

What kind of parent are you?  Are you a “consultant”, “helicopter” or “drill sergeant”?  Today, I’d like to share more how each of these parenting styles handle children when completing responsibilities and tasks:

The consultant:  The Love and Logic parent provides “time frames” in which a child may complete responsibilities.  They also model doing a good job, finishing, cleaning up, and feeling good about doing a task.

The helicopter: The helicopter parent provides no structure but complains, “After all I’ve done for you”.  They also whine and use guilt:  “When are you ever going to learn.  I always have to clean up after you.”

The drill sergeant: This parent demands that jobs or responsibilities be done NOW!  They issue orders and threats: “You get that room cleaned up or else…”
